Use quirky April holidays for book promotion

Schedule some fun into your book promotion in April by taking advantage of some of the quirkier holidays and special occasions that month brings us.

Use one or two of them as a springboard for an image you share on social media, a blog post that sparks conversation, or some free publicity.

Working a fun holiday into your book marketing activity on an ongoing basis is a great way to overcome marketing fatigue.

How to pair books with wacky occasions

To get things started, I’ve paired a few holidays with books so you can see the potential in this strategy:

  • April 1 is “International Fun at Work Day.” It’s the perfect fit for Fun Is Good: How to Create Joy and Passion in your Workplace and Career and Laugh out Loud: A User’s Guide to Workplace Humor.
  • Any author with “sibling,” “brother,” or “sister” in the title can take advantage of April 10, “National Siblings Day.” A couple that come to mind for me (an expert sibling as the middle child of seven born in 10 years) are The Sunshine Sisters and The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are.
  • If your novel takes place from the mid-1960s into the 1980s or is about music in any way, shape, or form, take a look at April 11, “Eight Track Tape Day.” You can also use it if your book was written during one of those three decades. You can use holiday even if your book doesn’t fit one of those descriptions. For example, if you’re a baby boomer, reminisce about the first eight-track cassette you bought. (Mine was Carole King’s “Tapestry.”)
  • Take a Chance Day” on April 23 is a great fit for a nonfiction motivational book (You Are a Badass) or a novel about what happens when the protagonist takes a chance (as in the romance novel Take a Chance).
