Amy Poehler’s Today Show cover reveal

Amy Poehler's Today Show cover revealThere are book publishing opportunities with the potential to make you rich and famous, but they are generally limited to authors who are already rich and famous.

Such a waste, right?

Take actress and comedienne Amy Poehler’s recent Today Show cover reveal for Yes Please.

When the show hosts did their set-up for Poehler’s on-air “here’s my book cover” segment, I thought, “Oh, this is going to be fun!” It was Amy Poehler, after all.

I was disappointed. It appeared to be totally impromptu, forcing Poehler to use her improv skills. (The clue?  When she said, “I’m not quite sure who I’m talking to.”) It felt like her publisher’s publicist popped in and said, “We’re going to shoot a video cover reveal for The Today Show first,” figuring that a gifted pro like Poehler could pull it off beautifully.

They might think that she did. I don’t, though. Here’s the reveal (after the commercial) — what do you think of it?

I love Amy Poehler, but really, I thought this was pretty lame. The whole “this was a last minute idea after the publicist talked her Today Show producer buddy” also came through in the disconnect between the images shared in our “special behind-the-scenes peek” at her cover shoot and the one that appears on the book cover (above).

It just didn’t work for me.

Have you seen a better cover reveal?

Here’s my question, then: Have you seen a memorable cover reveal from a “normal” author? Have you done one you’re proud of? I’m not suggesting that you need to do anything whiz-bang when you’ve got an approved cover you want to share with your networks, but I suspect that there are non-celebrity authors who have.

If you’re one of them, or you know someone who is, please share a link to the reveal in the comments section. And, if you’ve done an unusual cover reveal, maybe you’d like to tell us more in a guest blog post here.

The problem isn’t Amy, it’s her “people.” I’d guess she assumed that they would edit the video, not simply post all the outtakes.

Clearly they believe if you’ve got the right name attached to the project, that’s all you need.

Her publisher and/or publicist is incompetent.

I agree that it’s not Amy. I would have expected the Today Show production/video crew to have put together something more interesting.
